Handicapping American Idol 6

Top 6 - Results
Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Hellloooo! I'm not going to recap every iota and nuance of the Results Show tonight. As we all know, tonight is the Idol Gives Back marathon-telethon-etc. chock full of stars and performances. I'm only going to recap the actual results. So with that said, let's get going!

For fun, I'd like to take just a moment and talk about my traffic to this blog. I have quite a few loyal returning visitors (THANK YOU!). In my site traffic reports, I can see they get here without clicking from another location. MJ's Big Blog refers a lot of people as well (THANK YOU, TOO!). But sometimes people have done a Google or web search and have found my blog. Here are a few of the recent search phrases that got them here:

- "handicapping who will get voted off idol next"
- "song you will never walk alone again-jordin sparks"
- "Season 6 Haley Scarnato Photo boob"
- "Predictions american idol who's going home top 6 season 6"

So many paths to one location... And at least one goes through Haley's 'boob'. ;-) Follow me over the click for random comments and results.

OMG. "Most Shocking Result In Our History"??? WTF? If it's Melinda I think I'll run into the streets screaming.

Celebrity/Star Performance Tally:

Ellen Degeneres
Earth Wind & Fire
Quincy Jones
Ben Stiller
Teri Hatcher
Forest Whitaker

Whoop. Ryan's queued up with the six on the couches. First is Melinda - She's safe. Melinda's ouster would have been the only thing that would have shocked me, so I guess I won't be shocked.

Back to the cavalcade of stars and celebrities:

Il Divo
Dr. Phil
Dr. House (sorry - don't know his name)

Wow. They're pimping a $50 donation from an audience member to come up on stage and introduce an act. Yet they pull the seat # for Jack Black. Stage things much? Cute though. I bet he can actually singing when he isn't lampooning. He doesn't sound bad, and he's interesting at least! I also like that he referred to his "stones". First time EVER on AI, AND Sanjaya gets smacked (poor Sanjaya!!) So continuing the celeb tally:

Jack Black
Seal

Ryan's heading back over to the Idols. We know Melinda is safe. Blake's up now. Blake is safe. So apparently we're picking them off one at a time. And is it my imagination or do they have FEWER commercials tonight than ever before? Back to the star tally:

Carrie Underwood

Her piece was heartbreaking. More stars:

Rascal Flatts
Tom Anderson (MySpace Founder)

There's my new favorite commercial again - http://www.one.org. One of THE best charities in existence. It stays out of politics and manages only to try to relieve extreme poverty by securing commitments from world and business leaders and by raising money and awareness. We're on to the celebrity "Staying Alive". I like it! Funny. I can't say I can name all the stars, though.

More results - the SHOCKING results. Phil is up - he's SAFE. That leaves Lakisha, Jordin and Chris and we'll get to them later.

WOW - Ellen Degeneres just donated $100K. More stars:

Josh Groban
The African Children's Choir
Kelly Clarkson

Just for the record - so far tonight, Kelly Clarkson's performance was hands down magnificent. Back to the stars:

The Simpsons

Back to the results. We have three left without a verdict - Jordin, Chris and Lakisha. Lakisha stands - she's safe. That leaves Chris R. and Jordin. Remember - they said it was random order. More celebs:

Celine Dion
Elvis Presley (this is a little weird)
Madonna (who is in Malawi - one of the most horribly poverty-stricken countries in Africa)
Annie Lennox

Final results - Chris and Jordin stand. Over 70 million votes came in. Chris is safe. Jordin is also safe. They are all safe. This week's votes will be added to NEXT WEEK'S votes and they will send home TWO next week. Cool! I'm happy with that.

Meaningful things to remember from tonight:

Every 3 seconds a child dies in extreme poverty.
Every 30 second a child in Africa is orphaned by AIDS.
How can a child die for want of $.50 worth of medicine?

I like the idea of the whole show, I mean, Idol is one of the biggest shows EVER, so it only makes sense to "use that power for good." However, I have to admit to feeling a little put out that no one got eliminated. I think they should have not done the kids' performances at all this week and just concentrated on the charity stuff. It all seemed out of place to me. Also however though, next week when two get eliminated? That should be interesting.

Tonight was one of my pool nights, so I DVRed and had the advantage of not only fast-forwarding through the commercials but also most of the performances. I did watch EWF, because they're one of the best bands ever, the group sing, (ok, I didn't really watch but left it on while I threw clothes in the dryer), Jack Black because he's usually entertaining, (and was again, he CAN sing when he's not goofing off, but of course he's usually goofing off), Kelly Clarkson, (performance of the night) and Annie Lennox, (I also watched the Elvis/Celine thing and besides the just plain weirdness of it it was weird on a whole different level. The paired one of the most emotive singers of all time with one of the most emotionless). I also watched a few of the taped segments and will go back and watch the others. I agree that the Carrie Underwood thing was heartbreaking, (and she did a nice job with the song, Chrissie Hynde is one of my favorite singers ever and while it wasn't as good as hers it was still very good), but so were the bitson AIDS and Malaria in Africa. I was also glad to see the part on Appalachia. Education based charities have always been att the top of my list. Yes, hunger and health are vitally important issues and the need is immediate and dire, but education is SO important to break the cycle of poverty. I was also glad to see Madonna. Celebrities like her and "Brangelina" are often viewed cynically and there motives are questioned. To me they look like people that really care and are putting their money where their mouths are.

Now on to the results. Lame, lame, lame, and so cruel to Jordin, (she appeared to still be a little shaken when she started the final song, (which I missed most of, my DVR cut off just as Melinda started singing, must have gone past 10:00). I have no problem with not actually voting someone off tonight. Ok, extend the charity to the contestants. The problem is when you add the votes to next week and vote 2 off. There were about double the normal amount of votes this week. That's great, they raised lots of money, but it skews the results for next week. Someone could be the worst next week and be saved by the totals from this week. By the same token, the best next week might get knocked off because of the extra votes this week. Either eliminate someone tonight or just go another week.

After sleeping on it, (for a few short hours), I decided I really don't like it at all. ont voting someone off that is. Somebody received the lowest vote total this week. According to the rules of the game they get voted off. The don't get to sing again. Essentially they're getting a mulligan. Oops! Hit that one into the water, let me have another shot while everyone else has to play theirs where it lays. While I understand the spirit of what they did, (and the entire "vote for your favorite" instead of voting off the worst is pretty arbitrary anyway), I think they really changed the rules.

Jimmy - you're not the only one who's upset about it. I've seen many comments on other boards to the same general effect. And yeah, they jerked Jordin's chain pretty hard, poor thing.

For my part, I'm just totally neutral on the whole issue. After the show last night and, more importantly, the goal of the show last night, I can't see how they would have let someone go. It would have been a sour note to end on, no doubt. And so what you're left with is that someone got the lowest number of votes last night. Yet we don't know, nor do we really have a hint, of who that someone was. So with all the voting, and despite the unprecedented number of votes received, I would imagine it's proportionate. So then next week they do the voting and they add the two weeks together for a total score and the bottom two go.

Frankly, I don't have a problem with that. If they had identified the ranking of the votes last nights (top, bottom, etc.) I can see a problem because that person's fanbase would work hard to get them back on top next week - yet we have no idea where people fell this week, and I would imagine that the method they're going to use will pick off the two that would have gone anyway.

Now- had they done something like this last year while Taylor was in the competition? I might have felt differently, convinced that they were looking for a way to oust him. ;-)

Bridgett - I'm with you. on liking the idea and I guarantee you it had a positive effect on those charities. I'm ok with them competing and not voting anyone off, though, and I thought the results show being the charity show kind of fit. I think that was the only way to ensure the broadest viewership and therefore have the greatest charitable effect.

But what do I know?! :-D

haha, well i can see the point about getting the viewership. i probably still would have watched without the promise of results, but that might just be me. my guess is that the vote totals will even off, Ryan made it a point to say that it was in random order that he was sitting them down. We'll have to wait and see I guess!

I definitely get the spsirit of it but I still don't like it. Even if the votes were proportional this week it skews what ahppens next week. Let's say someone finished next to last this week. They didn't desrve to get boted off this week. Next week they really blow it out, should be top two, don't deserve to get voted off again. But her's the problem. They have to overcome a double vote total from this week. Even if it's proportional the total is double. That causes them to be bottom two so even though they wouldn't have been bottom either week, they're gone, the rules have changed.
