Handicapping American Idol 6

Sorry sorry sorry
Tuesday, May 15, 2007

I've just gotten home. And in about eight hours I need to be in an airport boarding a plane. I'm so sorry - I won't get to the recap until probably Friday, which will be moot, but I'll do it for posterity's sake. :-(

Ok - even though I've been critical of this season I'm still a junkie and so I'm packing up my laptop case and watching JUST the performances. Generally, here's where I rank them for the night:

Melinda Doolittle
Jordin Sparks
Blake Lewis

The distance between Melinda and Jordin is respectable. The distance between Jordin and Blake is HUGE.

Low point: Blake singing Roxanne. Major pitch and timing problems.

High point: Melinda singing Nutbush. DAYAM.

Quickie recap:

JORDIN
Wishing on a Star
- Overall very good vocally.
She Works Hard - Screechy, a bit imprecise.
I Who Have Nothing - Another great song for Jordin, I think her best of the night.

BLAKE
Roxanne - Worst song of the night. Out of tune and time.
This Love - Great choice for Blake and performed very well.
Robin Thicke Tune - Didn't know it, but liked it as much as the second song.

MELINDA
I Believe - Very very good. Vocally wonderful.
Nutbush - Performance of the night. Showed personality and range and edge.
I'm a Woman - Loved it, and it showed her range as an artist.

Jordin's numbers: 1-866-IDOLS01, 04, 07 or text to 5701

Blake's numbers: 1-866-IDOLS02, 05, 08 or text to 5702

Melinda's numbers: 1-866-IDOLS03, 06, 09 or text to 5703

Once again, overall I pretty much agree but digress in a couple of small areas. The order is right but I didn't think there was that huge a divide between Jordin and Blake. I think it was pretty much a good night for all three, but Blake just can't hang with the girls.

The breakdown:
Jordin
Wishing On a Star - Overall a good vocal. A little shaky in the beginning. She completely faded out in some of the quieter parts but a strong ending.
She Works Hard - Very weak performance. Very flat, (not the singing, the overall performance). She looked and sounded very uncomfortable. I don't remember Jordin being good on an upbeat song all season.
I Who Have Nothing - Her best of the night. Very strong and a smart choice because this is exactly the kind of song she shines on. Lots of big notes, her strength when she's on.
Overall - Tonight she showed her strengths, (mostly those big notes in her comfort zone), and avoided her weaknesses, (muddiness in the lower range and shrieking in her highs). But she also showed her limitations with her discomfort on the upbeat stuff. She's safe but she's not Melinda.

Blake
Roxanne - Overall not impressive, but not much worse than Jordin's second song. In Blake's defense, before they even started I thought, "I feel for whoever Paula picked for". Every season she makes a bad pick. I agree with Simon in that it's the kind of song that anyone is going to sound like they're imitating Sting. If she wanted a Police song I think "Don't Stand So Close To Me" would have been a much better choice for Blake and a song he could have done something with.
This Song - I agree. Great choice for Blake, easily one of his best this season.
When I Get You Alone - another very good performance for Blake. I really have to give him props for this one, because historically, and with the other performers tonight, the popular choice is to pick a song that they've already done and wowed with. Pretty gutsy to go with something new.
Overall - A good night for Blake, but not good enough. I admire the way he took chances all season even when it didn't work, but bye-bye Blake.

Melinda
I Believe - This song really set her apart. It was the kind of nuanced performance Jordin just isn't capable of yet.
Nutbush City Limits - Then again maaybe it was this song that set her apart. Attitude with a capital "A".
I'm a Woman - Ok, so this one set her apart too. Nobody else this season could get that bluesy feel.
Overall - Ok, I've been pimping Melinda all season, but there's a reason. She is hands down the best. She really showed her versatility tonight. She went from a beautiful love song to a flatout rocker to a bluesy grind without missing a beat. Apparently she can sing anything. She understands it's more than hitting the notes, (which she consistently does better than the others), she also gets the dynamics, she knows when to go big and when to hold back, like I said, the nuances of the song. But most importantly she just "gets" it. She understands what she's singing and gets the feel and the attitude. She never sounds derivative or copycat. As the season has gone on I've enjoyed watching her go from the meek and humble in her interviews to the confident woman that realizes she really belongs there, but on stage she's proven all along that she belongs there, a natural performer.
